Pre-Conference Tours Program
Tuesday October 17th - Saturday October 21st
Tour Leader: Robin Dickson & Professional Foresters
Day 1 - 9.00am Depart Mecure Hotel and travel via Huonville down to Geeveston Forest and Heritage Centre. Enjoy a tour of the Centre and morning tea before leaving for the Tahune Airwalk for a unique view of some of Tasmania’s forests. After lunch, take a tour of the Southern Forests and inspect Southwood as you make your way to the Apple Valley Craft Centre. Admire the local craftsmanship on display and relax with afternoon tea before heading back to Hobart.
Dinner bed and breakfast – Mecure Hotel - Hobart
Day 2 - 8.30am Depart Mecure Hotel and travel to the Central Highlands via Hamilton and Ouse. Morning tea will be at Bronte Park and then inspect selective harvesting of an E.delegatensis forest. Travel on to beautiful Lake St Clair. Enjoy the views, tour the vistors centre and have lunch before journeying to Strahan via Queenstown where you can take note of the effects of the early mining days.
Dinner bed and breakfast – Hilltop Garden View Hotel - Strahan
Day 3 - 8.30am Enjoy the amazing scenery on the Gordon River Cruise. Stop off on Sarah Island (an early convict colony) and view untouched rainforests. Sit back and relax as you cruise along these picturesque waterways (morning tea and lunch is included). Travel to Smithton via the Murchison Highway passing numerous plantations on the way.
Dinner bed and breakfast – Tall Timbers
Day 4 - 8.30am Depart Tall Timbers for Dismal Swamp. You never know what you might find on the fascinating journey that unfolds as you descend 40 metres from the Visitor Centre on the sinkhole rim into a world at the bottom of a giant sinkhole. Move on to Preolenna to inspect E.nitens clearwood plantations, have lunch and take a tour of the mill. Next visit Gunns Nursery and Veneer Mill before arriving at the nights accommodation. Have a night out for dinner at Wellers restaurant.
Bed and breakfast – Bayside Accommodation - Burnie
Day 5 - 9.00am Depart Bayside for Burnie Port to inspect the Forestry Tasmanian Log Export facility and Gunns Export Woodchip loading facility. Travel to Boland Farm Forestry for a tour of the farm and morning tea and then on to Guide Falls Reserve for lunch. Take time at Ashgrove Cheese Factory to sample the many different flavours on offer before moving on to your Launceston hotel.
